Catalogue  Comment

Text Box: (An Otaki member recently drew our attention to the plummeting catalogue prices for some of the recent issues. In particular, he had looked at prices for the 1974 Offshore Islands Issue, comparing those in the ACS catalogue (Dec 2001) with the Len Jury catalogue (Jan 2002).

The questions in his mind were ~

Is this price reduction realistic?    Is it only Len Jury who is over-stocked in this area, or all of NZ?

Is the next ACS catalogue (due out this month) going to reflect this drop in value?    What will be next?

Members who have been stockpiling mint stamps will need to think of using up a few on letters!

Hardly a week goes by without a member of the public phoning us at the KSC asking "I have all these sheets of Health stamps put away for 50 years, what should I do with them?" They are usually not impressed with my wall-papering suggestions!

From Our Mailbag

          Hi there Dave and Jan,

This is the second box in a row I've received from Tauranga without stamps on it.  Is it possible you could mention in a coming newsletter that receiving stamps on the boxes is a fun thing and we should all try to do this - it's only a matter of asking at the PO counter                       Regards   MB Opotiki

Yes, it never fails to disappoint us when we hear how lazy and thoughtless some members can be.

It costs a lot in postage each year for members who are on a postal circuit, and we know their one compensation is the stamps off incoming parcels, that they expect to get for their collections,. To make it easy, we provide nice stamps for them to buy, at only a few cents above face value, in the last book of every circuit box. It costs members only a few seconds of their time to do the decent thing! We have mentioned this often before - we can only hope they will eventually take notice.

+  Dear Jan and Dave

Just a quick note to let you know of my experience at the local Post Office when posting off a 2kg box recently. I had put on a POD and a nice selection of stamps to the value of $4.75. Thought I had done everything right and wouldn’t hold up anyone at the counter, but they placed the box on top of the scales and said it would be $5.95 as it was 60g over the 2kg. I stood at the counter gob-smacked and speechless - however the price structure was explained to me and I was let off with a warning! The attendant then lightly cancelled the parcel and placed it in the basket.              Best Wishes   CW Waihi

Our apologies - this was our fault. A consequence of increasing the number of pages in circuit books from 6 to 8, has been that the overall weight of boxes has crept up (the problem is exacerbated by members who stick bulky items on the inside back cover). Realising the significance of the 2kg limit, we have now cut back the number in regular (white) boxes to 16 books. We now weigh all parcels before they leave - and where necessary, replace some heavier books with lighter ones.
